Psoriasis

It's no secret Jackson has some nasty skin issues.  There are only three pediatric dermatologists in the state.  Thankfully, one of them is only 20 minutes away and specializes in infants.  I called to schedule an appointment over a month ago and our time finally came this morning.

The dermatologist examined every crease in Jackson's skin and confidently informed us that he has psoriasis.  She told us that if he had eczema this severely Jackson would be clawing at his skin from itchiness.  Also, eczema is more commonly present on open skin like the hands and feet, whereas psoriasis appears in the folds of skin.  (It appears differently in infants than adults.)

The nurse swabbed Jackson's skin to test for any yeast or bacteria.  We will get the results next week.  We were given a strict routine to follow for the next month.  A follow up visit is scheduled for Tuesday, August 30.  If any bacteria for yeast is present Jackson may be prescribed oral medication.

Our new nightly routine includes (in order):
-Soak in a plain water bath with 1 tbsp of baking soda each night (no soap)
-Apply prescription ointment to face and diaper area
-Apply prescription topical cream to body (Thank God for generics!  Without insurance it cost $223!)
-Apply Cetaphil cream head to toe

In addition to the creams, we are to use sensitive disposable diapers and wipes for one month and apply a thick layer of Maximum Strength Desitin (40% zinc) at every diaper change.  This is very frustrating for us since we have invested so much time and money in cloth diapers.  Now we're investing nearly as much money in doctor's visits, disposable diapers, and various ointments.  Oh well!

  1. A good Soap for Psoriasis would be effective on the skin patches without getting harsh on your skin. Thanks for sharing.
